SERVICE SCOPE

Flat Rack, Open Top & Flat Container: Differences and Selection Guide

Flat Rack

Flat Rack FR

No side walls, no roof — only a base frame with end posts (partially collapsible); cargo may overhang sideways, exceed height upward and even project beyond both ends. First choice for over-width equipment, 43/45-ton mega energy storage cabinets and long oversized pieces.

Open Top

Open Top OT

Open top covered with tarpaulin; cargo can be hoisted vertically into the box by crane from above. First choice for over-height machinery and tower-type goods that basically stay within width/length limits; the cover is removable for easy inspection.

Flat Container

Flat Container

Full flat base-frame structure with no posts and no roof; four-side free loading and unloading. Suits oversized heavy pieces within height limits, with flexible stowage and high utilization through multi-piece assembly.

HOW IT WORKS

Special Container Operation Process (6 Steps)

  • 1
    Inquiry

Submit cargo dimension drawings, gross weight, center of gravity and destination port; get an initial proposal within 24 hours.

  • 2
    Plan & Quotation

Deliver a special container shipping plan: box-type selection, lifting method, lashing & securing plan and cost breakdown.

  • 3
    Documentation

Handle the out-of-gauge (OOG) declaration, lashing & securing plan and stowage drawing; submit to the carrier for review with the booking.

  • 4
    Special Container Booking

Lock in Flat Rack / Open Top container supply and space; confirm cargo cut-off time and OOG surcharge.

  • 5
    Loading & Lashing

Position by crane, weld stoppers and secure with lashings; full photo records under supervised loading; issue a lashing certificate.

  • 6
    Ocean Transit & Clearance Delivery

Track and report at each transit milestone; destination clearance, over-sized discharge and DDP door-to-door delivery.

STANDARDS

Special Container Lifting & Lashing Securing Standards

Lifting & Positioning

Select spreader beams / slings and counterweights per cargo lifting-point data; re-verify crane load and cargo center of gravity before lifting; visually re-check after positioning that the base frame bears evenly, avoiding localized concentrated loads that could damage the container floor.

Lashing & Securing (CSS Code)

Per the International Chamber of Shipping's Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing: tighten steel lashing bars with turnbuckles diagonally, fit welded stopper blocks as limits, spread loads with wooden dunnage; heavy cargo requires verifying base-frame strength and local deck load.

Lashing Certificate & Supervised Loading Photos

Issue a lashing certificate and loading photos after securing, for carrier, terminal and insurer inspection; HUIN International Logistics provides certified supervisors on site as default, with full records kept for reference.

OOG Marking & Stowage Plan

Apply OOG warning markings to the external packaging of out-of-gauge pieces; the stowage plan notes overhang direction, OOG dimensions and stowage position, meeting carrier stowage/segregation and terminal lifting review requirements.
